Technology in Harmony with Culture and Environment

This article by Sippanondha Ketudat shares the predictions for the future of Thailand. Written in 1990, we can now assess some of the predictions and revisit phenomena from this previous time. This book presents the basic working philosophy of Thailand’s culture, government, processes and areas for growth. This looks specifically at impacts of globalization and technology in the face of increasing development and the urban vs. rural divide.

It is notable from this resource that the “technology used in Thailand should be planned in such a way as to do the minimum possible damage to the natural environment.” This is significant because it leads us to understand that there was some planning for this area of interest regarding measures of sustainability. Whereas, the author has been involved in “planning and employing technology in order to promote modernization and development in Thailand.” But, planning can only go so far unless implemented and monitored. Thus, Ketudat shares an optimistic and pessimistic view of how technology, culture and environment intertwine as time goes on.

The optimistic view combines the kinds of Thais that will be born and impact the culture and workforce, as well as considering governmental policies, positive economic progress and positive development utilizing technology. These are all projections, yet the author has much to say of the positive or optimistic aspects regarding hopes for Thailand’s development and future. On the other hand, the pessimistic view is presented to share the possibilities of “External Forces” impacting “Internal Assets.” Somewhat similarly presented, this section examines the various cultural, governmental and technological changes that could have a negative impact on sustainable development regarding technology and natural systems or resources.

Overall, this article highlights the structure of Thailand, including its strengths and weaknesses in a variety of areas, all of which impact each other and the environment. Human decisions will decide how Thailand grows into itself in the light of globalization, global technology and industrialization impacting urban and rural areas differently.
